William Tietkins has been described as the last of the old school of Australian explorers. He arrived in Australia as a 15 year old only to be abandoned by his guardian on the Victorian Goldfields. From this inauspicious background he went on to explore outback Australia, first as part of Ernest Giles' party then leading his own expediitons.
